Submission Guidelines
Submissions to Vexillum are limited to one scholarly paper per issue.
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors who do not follow these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The author of the submission must be:
- a currently enrolled undergraduate;
- a bachelor’s degree holder submitting a paper no more than a year after receiving his or her bachelor’s degree;
- or a student currently enrolled in a post-baccalaureate, non-graduate degree program.
- The submission file is in OpenOffice (.odt), Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), Rich Text Format (.rtf), or WordPerfect document (.wpd) file format.
- The text satisfies these stylistic and bibliographic requirements:
- uses double-spacing;
- uses 12-point, Times New Roman font;
- employs italics rather than underlining;
- uses footnotes rather than endnotes;
- cites sources according to the Chicago Manual of Style (www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide);
- includes all illustrations, figures, and tables in an appendix with proper citation to the appendix number where necessary, and said additions are original works by the author.
Submission Categories
Authors are asked to place their submissions in one of two categories:
(1) Ancient & Classical, which includes academic papers/articles written on any topic falling into the chronological period between roughly 3,600 B.C.E. and 476 C.E.;
(2) Late Antique & Medieval, which includes academic papers/articles written on any topics falling into the chronological period between roughly 476 C.E. and 1500 C.E.
Papers must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 200 words. The text itself should be between 2500 and 10,000 words in length (not including notes and bibliography) and may include original figures. Papers submitted for consideration must be written in English; non-English quotations are welcomed, as long as translations are provided in the notes for languages other than German, French, Greek, and Latin. Any appendices of original figures, tables, and illustrations must be placed after the text of the paper with in-text citation to the proper appendix number; bibliographies should be placed at the very end of the submission after the appendices (if appropriate). Please also include a short (100 words or less) biography of yourself, your interests, etc. at the top of the submitted document.
Vexillum is no longer accepting senior theses; however, we strongly encourage authors to submit a condensed version or a chapter from any senior thesis on a subject falling into one of the two aforementioned categories. This condensed version or chapter should conform to all guidelines for other submissions listed above. If you believe shortening your work to this length or submitting only one chapter would compromise your work’s integrity, please contact the editors (vexillumcontact@gmail.com).
